“It’s Not What I Did”

I’m sure I have heard the song before, but it hit me differently this morning.

“It’s not what I did, it’s what I didn’t do.” The song is about a man who messed up in his marriage. It wasn’t because of some things he had done - according to him. Instead it was due to things he failed to do.

How true that is of all of us.

We call it sins of commission and ommission.

It is not enough to avoid doing the things we should not do, we must also do the things we should do.

Two examples where God shares that very concept with us.

Things we are not to do:

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)

Things to do:

21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21 ESV)
