David, King of Israel, was described as a man after God’s own heart. I can imagine other biblical characters who would fall under the same category. What about us? Can we come close to that kind of heart?
How did David get there?
From his childhood he had a deep and abiding faith in God. No doubt this was influenced by his parents. But his faith was also his choice and it was his choice to grow in that faith.
His faith grew in his constant awareness of the things around him. He knew for certain these things were not accidents nor things made by men. He knew God made them and sustained them. He stood in constant wonder and awe of all God had created in the world around him and the heavens above him.
Does our view of the heavens and the earth bring us thoughts of wonder about God?
His faith grew more and deepened in understanding as he devoted himself to the word of God. The word that would become the light of his path and the lamp of his feet. It would be the word that formed his conscience, directed his mind, corrected his mistakes, and gave him the hope of forgiveness and life.
He gave his talents and abilities in praise and devotion to God. His heart was filled with him. No wonder he was the man after God’s own heart. Can we get there? Yes, we can, and we even have a better, more perfect example than David. We call him Jesus.
