When Your Emotions Rule You

Mark 6: 22 and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give […]

Mark 6: 22 and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.” (NASB).

My mouth has gotten me into difficulty many times in the past. Have you ever done the same? I tend to say yes to too many things, to the point that I get in trouble for not being able to fulfill my promises. On other occasions, I have responded in a bad manner to someone who I thought was being rude, but it turned out they were joking.

Herod, being an evil person, let himself be carried away by his emotions. He never thought that this girl would ask for such a thing as John the Baptist’s head. The girl didn’t know what to ask; however, she was influenced by her mother to ask for the prophet’s head. The lessons I take from this Biblical story are: Don’t promise anything when you don’t have control over your emotions. Be aware of who is influencing those who ask for promises from you. And finally, don’t make promises in order to impress someone. Make sure God would approve of that promise. Think on these things when making a promise. If we do that, we won’t have to worry about getting in trouble.

Focus On The Text

I really enjoy using my computer Bible software. It is called BibleWorks. Early on, it would always start with a reminder to “Focus on the text.” God tells us to do the same thing. "So you shall observe to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not...

Biddable

"Biddable" means "easily led, taught or controlled." The Oxford Dictionary defines it as " meekly ready to accept and follow instructions." Whether it is describing a good or bad quality in a person would depend upon the nature of the instruction or leading to which a...

The Greatest Thing Ever Said

This is not new. But sometimes it helps to look at something with a different perspective to broaden our understanding. So, what is the greatest thing ever said? Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. (Matthew 22:37...

Choice

Choices have consequences. Our choices mean certain things.   “...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).  When Joshua spoke these words he was calling upon all Israel to make a choice. He had already made his choice. He shared it with...

John 17: 20-23

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory...

Being Like Jesus

Being like Jesus, now there is a challenge for all of us. The first step of this challenge is to make sure we are actually being like Jesus.   I read an article about a man who is considered by his peers to be the nicest man in his  profession. After reading his...

Revival

Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? I don’t know what the word “REVIVAL” brings to mind for you. For some people it may bring to mind a very specific picture of a church event. This week I am at a youth minister’s retreat in Columbia,...

Three Levels of Maturity

I’m not sure where the following thoughts are taken from, but they are worth considering again and striving to follow. It seems there are three levels of maturity we pass through. They apply to our lives in general, but also to each individual struggle or issue we...
