Driving into work this morning, I was greeted by a sea of red, white, and blue. Today is Veteran’s Day and the City of Pelham always puts out flags in the median of the four lane to commemorate Veteran’s Day. They also put white crosses in the ground with the name of every slain soldier from Pelham who has lost their life in the service of our great nation. I love it, and I am so glad that our city does this.
I remember when Megan was in kindergarten that she asked what all this meant. I told her this was the day that we remembered our veterans and all they have done to keep our nation free. We talked several minutes with me answering different questions that she had. I then asked her – “Do you know what a veteran is?” Without hesitation she responded, “A veteran is someone who makes your dog or cat better when they get sick.” We spent a few more minutes discussing the difference in a veteran and a veterinarian. We still tease her about today being Veterinarian’s Day.
Today as I remember our veterans and thank them for continuing to fight for my freedom, I want to also turn my attention to the real freedom fighter, Jesus Christ. I was chained to sin, but Jesus broke the chains. I was condemned to die, but Jesus set me free to Life. I was a prisoner to Satan, but Jesus broke down the walls and has set me free to enjoy the benefits of His Kingdom. Today and everyday may I remember the symbol of the cross, but oh so much more than that. May I remember the reality of the cross.
