Hot enough for you? Getting tired of being asked that question?
A little research on record droughts will show that they are dated by the year in which they occurred. Such as the 1829 major drought in Western Australia. “This drought was so extreme that it nearly destroyed all agriculture in western Australia forcing settlers to traverse long distances for water and pastures for their flocks.”
The average rainfall in Shelby County for the year is 33.87”. This year we are under the average by –7.92”.
But none of that compares to the drought in Israel in the days of Elijah when there was neither dew nor rain. (1 Kings 17:1) It did not rain for three and a half years. (James 5:17) It was not simply a shortage of rain, it was no rain.
In reminding us of the event, James will emphasize the importance that prayer played in that drought.
It is also good to be reminded of God’s promise to us:
“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” (Gen. 8:22 NIV)
Even in uncomfortable weather conditions we can be reminded of our Lord’s promises and the importance of listening to him and talking to him.
