Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. (NIV)
Where did you go for your last vacation? What places did you eat? When this pandemic is over, would you go back to those same familiar places? I would like to think so! In the rare opportunities I can take my family to Mexico, we love visiting the places where I grew up. We love going to the plaza and eating ice cream at night. Also, the one place we cannot miss is the Mayan ruins. My children love to hear about the Mayan history, especially how that culture thrived and was so innovative. It makes them feel like they are part of that history as well.
In the same way, young people today are trying to be part of something that is familiar to them. They are trying to relate to things and places that help them understand why they are the way they are. We cannot control what they see all day or what influences them, but we can control where to direct them. If we want them to be Christians, we must show them how to be one. If we want our children to be close to God, we need to set that example for them. Read, pray, serve, and love. They will copy more what they see than what we say. If we don’t teach them to do the right thing, they will follow in the foolish things of the world. Help them to walk wisely in this world.
