Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. – Matthew 5:8
Many people today wonder why they can’t see God or the things that he does. The answer is in Matthew and it’s pretty clear. Jesus tells the people that those who are able to see God, whether in this life or the next, are the ones that continually cleanse their hearts.
Jesus wanted the people to focus on the interior not the exterior. The Jewish religious leaders focused on cleansing and washing the outward, i.e the instruments of worship, the hands before eating, the clothes, etc. Jesus wanted us to focus on the inward, the heart. It is not the outward appearance, but the inward that allows us to see God. If we are trying to find God in the things that we do, we are going to miss him. But it is when a person cleanses their heart that they can see God. When we are able to see God, we will know how blessed we are.
