Jane’s treatment is having an impact on her hands. Therefore, she informed me yesterday that I would need to iron my clothes for a while. That’s not a problem. But instead of starting last night, I thought about ironing which led to this article.
Ironing is important. Ironing or smoothing things out is even more important. It’s about settling things and putting things back in order. God demands it.
Psalm 133 is a short Psalm—only three verses. The middle lines give a physical illustration of the blessing. The first line and last line give the heart of the Psalm.
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! … For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. (Psalm. 133:1,3 ESV)
“When brothers live together in unity, there God has commanded the blessing.” And what is the blessing? “Life forevermore.”
But sometimes, brethren do not talk in order to iron things out. Even more often, people fail to listen.
Sometimes, perhaps more often than we realize, one desires to “iron things out” and the other does not. Then we have this instruction from God: If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. (Romans 12:18 ESV)
We all have our “irregular people,” and God knows it. We do what we can, but we are not responsible for “ironing” others out. We each have to do that for ourselves.
