It’s a common question. All of us have been asked it often.
But some questions become extremely significant because of the one who is asking.
Jesus asked a number of questions. All of which are very important for us to give serious consideration to how we would answer.
This is one of those questions.
Jesus raises the question four times. Four times in the book of Matthew and once in Mark, which is a repeat of one of the accounts of Matthew.
There were a large number of books available in Jesus’ day. But Jesus only has one book in mind when he raises the question. He is asking, “Have you never read in scripture?” “Have you never read what God says to you?” That was and is the only book which matters.
The question points us to the place of truth. Each time Jesus raises the question he is dealing with someone’s misunderstanding of things revealed by God. He is speaking to people who are wrong and they would not be wrong if they had only read and correctly understood what God had said in the scripture.
Jesus would ask the same question of us.
There are so many different ideas about God and what God would have us to do. Are we reading what God has actually said?
