Last night was the Shelby County Band Showcase at Helena High School. It’s amazing how quickly life changes. Years ago, it was my mom and dad slaving away in the concession stand and hauling equipment all over the stadium. Now, I’m the dad. The running joke all night long was, “you’re doing such a good job, I’m tripling your pay.” Growing up is hard, hard work, but I hope we never lose sight of the priceless investments so many make in our children.
Through the years, what I have grown to love more and more as youth minister is watching our teens shine with the talents God has given them and also catching a glimpse of their parents cheering for them.
As we all continue to grow, may we also never lose sight of the following thoughts:
Keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years, and bring you prosperity. Proverbs 3:1-2
No failure is ever final – nor is any success.
Have a firm handshake and look people in the eye.
Say “thank you” and “please” a lot.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7
What you are becoming is more important than what you are accomplishing.
Compliment at least three people every day.
You will never build a reputation, a business, or a relationship on what you intend to do. Your intentions may be sincere and honorable, but unless you put them into action, nothing is changed.
Every one of these requires action, and never forget that you and God make an incredible team. Have a productive week.
