Luke 17:10 “So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'” (NASB)
A few weeks ago, my wife went to see her family in California. She left me in charge of my two oldest children. One thing she told us before she left was “Keep the house clean. I cleaned it so please leave it the same way when I get back home.” For two weeks we had to pick up after ourselves, wash our dishes, put our laundry up and take care of the pets. When she got home, she was happy to see that the house was clean. The first thing she said was, “good job”. I felt proud, I felt that I had accomplished something important. I did what she asked for, and I kept my promise to do so. This is something I need to be doing all the time!
The verse above reminds me that as a Christian, I have duties to perform, I have commandments to obey, and I am here in this world to serve God’s people, not the other way around. I need to serve the brethren, not because I am a preacher or a deacon or an elder. I need to do it, because I am a Christian. When we do that, we do what is required of us. I look forward when my Lord hopefully will tell me, “good job”.
