Trick or Treating is over, lots of sweets and candies have been eaten, and now we are entering one of my favorite times of the year. November is often associated with thankfulness and gratitude as we prepare for Thanksgiving at the end of the month. I love the idea of taking this month as a starting point to help our children focus on what they are thankful for. What if we set a goal for the month?
Each night invite every member in your family to list 5 things they are thankful for in their life. Do not be afraid to list anything that crosses your mind. Some items may seem superficial, however I have found that even small things are worth giving thanks!
Here is my list for today:
1. Rainy days
2. Sonic Dr. Pepper
3. Working with the children of Riverchase
4. Listening to the kids sing praises to God
5. Taking Linus (our dog) for walks at Oak
Mountain
The reason I enjoy making these lists is because it allows us to slow down, stop and reflect on what God has done for us. We are busy, yet we should make time to praise God each day for what he has done in our lives. Remember the story of the 10 lepers in Luke 17? Only one leper returned to Jesus to show gratitude. Sometimes I am exactly like one of the 9 lepers, who although was made clean, failed to give thanks to God. God deserves our thankfulness. Make time this month to remember that all blessings come from Him. Slow down, enjoy each other, focus on your blessings- not only for this month, but for every day we are given.
“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” Psalm 106:1
