Genesis 28: 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” (NIV)
It was in Luz where Jacob saw the vision of the angels ascending and descending from heaven. After waking up he realized what had happened to him. While he was on his way to find the house of Laban, God decided to meet him on the way to show Jacob that He was going to be with him along the way. It was then, that Jacob understood the awesomeness of a place. He didn’t call the place awesome because of its magnificent mountains or waters, or waterfalls. Although those places can take your breath away, they don’t compare to the awesomeness of finding God’s presence.
I believe that when we find that place, when we find God’s presence, we will be saying, ”How awesome is this place.” That place for me is the church. It’s not because the beautiful plants, the condition of the building or the beautiful landscape, I feel that way because you are here! God’s beautiful and magnificent creation. God’s people who have been redeemed and bought with the precious blood of Christ. God’s presence is here because all of us have put on Christ and are clothed with him.
