Romans 15: 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (NIV)
Why do we need to study what happened in the past? Is it important? Is it important to know what happened and how it happened? Yes, it is. However, within the last ten years, and possibly more, people have not taken an interest in history. Some people think history is boring and it’s irrelevant. Some people have trouble remembering dates and names and events, and I don’t blame them.
When we talk about church history, it’s important to know what happened. However I believe it’s also important to know why things happened. In Bible history we understand that God is in control. When we study all the events that happened ages ago, we realize that God is working to take care of his people. When we look at the events in Israel’s history and why God helped them at some point but not other. When we study those events, we will see that God never fails his people. We will see that God always is there to rescue, and we will see that God always wins. Have encouragement knowing that whatever happens, God will take care of you.
