The word is “dorea”. It is given three definitions in the BDAG Greek-English Lexicon.
1. Being freely given, a gift, without payment, gratis.
It is used with this meaning in these verses:
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. (Mat 10:8)
being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; (Rom 3:24)

2. Being without contributory fault, undeservedly, without reason or cause.
It is used with this meaning in the following verse:
“But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘THEY HATED ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.’ (Joh 15:25)

3. Without purpose, in vain, to no purpose.
The word is used with this meaning in the following verse:
“I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.” (Gal 2:21)

In all four verses it is the same word “dorea.” In each verse it is used in a different sense.

With each use we gain a fuller sense of the free gift of our justification by the grace of God through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus and given to us by our faith in Jesus Christ.

Washington Speaks

As we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day, I thought it would be good to remember some words of final warning given to us by George Washington in his Farewell Address. He spoke of the great care that needed to be taken to guard and preserve the unity of our government....

Focus On The Text

I really enjoy using my computer Bible software. It is called BibleWorks. Early on, it would always start with a reminder to “Focus on the text.” God tells us to do the same thing. "So you shall observe to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not...

Biddable

"Biddable" means "easily led, taught or controlled." The Oxford Dictionary defines it as " meekly ready to accept and follow instructions." Whether it is describing a good or bad quality in a person would depend upon the nature of the instruction or leading to which a...

The Greatest Thing Ever Said

This is not new. But sometimes it helps to look at something with a different perspective to broaden our understanding. So, what is the greatest thing ever said? Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. (Matthew 22:37...

Choice

Choices have consequences. Our choices mean certain things.   “...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).  When Joshua spoke these words he was calling upon all Israel to make a choice. He had already made his choice. He shared it with...

John 17: 20-23

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory...

Thank You, RCOC!

What a turn out Sunday night. What a joyful, fulfilling evening. What an example of organized chaos. But we got it done. Over 150 buckets filled. All delivered to Healing Hands and they should be headed out today to the ship that will deliver them to those in need in...

Being Like Jesus

Being like Jesus, now there is a challenge for all of us. The first step of this challenge is to make sure we are actually being like Jesus.   I read an article about a man who is considered by his peers to be the nicest man in his  profession. After reading his...

Revival

Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? I don’t know what the word “REVIVAL” brings to mind for you. For some people it may bring to mind a very specific picture of a church event. This week I am at a youth minister’s retreat in Columbia,...
