Football Season

1Corinthians 9:24-25 “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.”
You probably already know which games you will be attending, and after talking to some of you, you already know the itinerary for the rest of your Saturdays this Fall. You know where you are staying, which congregation you are going to attend, which friends are going with you and what tailgate food you will be eating. It is actually starting to sound fun! One thing I would like for all of us to remember is that wherever we go, wherever we are, we should always act like a Christian. Whether our team wins or loses. We should remember to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We can still have fun. Sports inspire us with displays of grit and grace. Competitive drama moves us in ways that few other forms of entertainment do. Watching sports can be a means of celebrating God’s goodness, leading to a spirit of hope and joy. Left unchecked, passion can lead to obsession. Sports reminds us that all of this is temporary and that our hope is eternal.
