Zechariah 8: 16 These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; 17 do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the Lord. (NIV)
Is it possible to obey everything in the Bible? How good of a job are we doing everyday following God’s commands? When I think about these questions, I struggle. I don’t do these things everyday. Some days I do better than others, but it seems like I forget to follow the basic commandments. When God promised that His people would come back to Zion from exile, He wanted them to have these qualities. These qualities will make them different. These qualities require practice and self-awareness.
The lack of practice of these things was what brought them to captivity. Some of the reasons they went into captivity in the first place was because their leadership failed to practice these things. We need to make sure that as the people of God, we don’t forget to speak truth, especially to each other. If we are to render judgement, we need to find the truth. We shouldn’t be looking to stir or promote evil against anyone. Before we speak, we need to make sure that we don’t talk about people. God hates all these things! When we come out of this pandemic, let’s make sure that we change some things in our lives. Let’s follow God more every day.
