There is a hole about the size of a golf ball in the back wall of the office work room. The hole was made by a goof ball. The secretaries noticed it right away as they came to work Monday morning. They wanted to make sure I knew about it. I had to confess, I’m the goof ball.

You see, last Friday afternoon I was the only one in the office when I had one of those thoughts that plague golfers. It suddenly occurred to me what might be wrong with my golf swing. I looked for something to simulate a golf club so I could at least take a practice swing.

I saw it through Scott’s open office door. There against the wall was a round curtain rod. I picked it up using my best golf grip and it fit perfectly. I went into the workroom and did a couple of waggles (you may not understand if you don’t play golf). The waggles felt good so I took my stance to make the golf swing of my thoughts and dreams.

It was actually more powerful than I had imagined. And there in lies the problem. Not the power, but my thinking or lack there of. You see, this was a curtain rod, not a golf club. Curtain rods are made of two parts. One part slid into the other. With the “power” of my swing the one part slid out of the second part and went in perfect flight to the wall. Thus the golf ball size hole made by the goof ball.

One of our secretaries, who shall remain unnamed to protect her innocence, said to me, “I could see it being done by anyone but you.” To which I replied, “I’m sorry, but I am a lot more disappointing than many people realize.”

Isn’t that one of our greatest fears? That people may come to know just how disappointing we really are? I can identify with Paul when he says he is the chief of all sinners.

But the greatest news of all is that God knows we often do dumb things. He knows our hearts often lean toward foolishness. He allowed Jesus to die for our sins and foolishness. He then warns us to be careful how we treat other goof balls, because we are one ourselves.

Welcome To Spring

I know, you’re ready for the pollen to go away. But isn’t it a beautiful time of year. Did you catch the equinox? It occurred on Monday, March 20. You can even check out the exact time. Four times every year we know the dates for the precise movement of the sun, or to...

John 3:16

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 ESV) “For God” - The only God, all-powerful, all knowing, without beginning or end, Creator of all things. “So loved” - More than...

Wisteria

I find myself captivated by Wisteria every year at this time. Partly because it was Cathy’s favorite spring time flower. She really like the purple blooms. But we never planted any and neither does Jane have any interest in planting Wisteria. The opening words of an...

Got A Question?

Do you have a question you would love to ask Jesus? What would it be? He was certainly asked a lot of questions. Like the one Peter asked about the future of his fellow apostle, John. Jesus’ answer? “What is that to you? Be faithful to me.” He didn’t always give an...

After God’s Own Heart

David, King of Israel, was described as a man after God’s own heart. I can imagine other biblical characters who would fall under the same category. What about us? Can we come close to that kind of heart? How did David get there? From his childhood he had a deep and...

Groundhog Day

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was...

Provided

And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." (Job 1:21 ESV) Those words spoken by Job need to be pondered by all of us. We came into this world with nothing...

Some Wisdom for the Day

When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. (Prov. 29:2 ESV) One's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. (Prov. 29:23 ESV) Scoffers set a city aflame, but the wise turn away wrath....

In Him

In Christ we have every spiritual blessing heaven has to offer. It was God’s choice even before he created the world to choose those who are in Christ to be his chosen people. In Christ we are considered holy and blameless before God. In Christ we are adopted as God’s...

It Is Written

It may have been about 2005 when we moved into our current subdivision. Our house was one of the first houses built in our area of the subdivision. I’m not trying to offer that as an excuse for what happened, but then again, I may be. Entering our subdivision the...
